Photo Dynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that uses light-sensitive drugs, called photosensitizers, in combination with a specific wavelength of light to target and treat various skin conditions. When the photosensitizer is applied to the affected area and exposed to the light, it produces a form of oxygen that destroys nearby abnormal cells.
PDT is commonly used to treat conditions such as acne, actinic keratosis, and certain types of skin cancer. The treatment helps to reduce inflammation, improve skin texture, and promote healing, leading to clearer and healthier skin.

Treatment Duration:

60-90 minutes

Health Restrictions

Photo Dynamic Therapy, while generally safe, come with certain health restrictions and considerations. The following conditions might have complications with this treatment:

  • Photosensitivity or Porphyria

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Active skin infections

  • Skin conditions (eczema, rosacea, etc.)

It's crucial to disclose your complete medical history during the consultation to ensure the procedure's safety and effectiveness for you.

The Procedure

A Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) procedure begins with the application of a photosensitizing agent to the target area of the skin. After allowing time for the agent to be absorbed, typically ranging from a few minutes to several hours depending on the condition being treated, the area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light. This light activates the photosensitizer, producing a form of oxygen that destroys nearby abnormal cells. The procedure is usually completed in about 60 to 90 minutes, and patients may experience mild redness and sensitivity in the treated area afterward.

Addressing Aesthetic Goals

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is used to improve overall skin texture and tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and minimize sun damage and age spots. PDT aims to clear acne by targeting and destroying the bacteria that cause breakouts, as well as reducing oil gland activity. Additionally, it helps to diminish the appearance of precancerous lesions, such as actinic keratosis, promoting healthier skin.
